1. Study what works in your niche
Before generating, look at the top thumbnails for your topic. Note the colors, faces, and text patterns that get clicks — then aim to stand out, not blend in.
2. Nail the concept first
A thumbnail needs one clear idea and emotion. Decide the single focal point and the 3-5 word hook before you touch a generator.
3. Generate the background/subject
Use Midjourney or Leonardo for a striking background or subject image. Describe the mood, style, and composition; generate several and pick the boldest.
4. Add the text (this is key)
Most generators mangle text, so either add it in a design tool (Canva, Photoshop) or use Ideogram, which renders words accurately, for text-based thumbnails.
5. Make it pop
High contrast, a clear focal point, bold readable text, and emotion win clicks. Bump saturation and contrast, and keep it legible at small sizes.
6. Test at thumbnail size
Shrink it to the size it appears in feeds. If the text is not readable and the idea not instant at that size, simplify until it is.
